The Story
The South Russian Ovcharka is a powerful, primitive livestock guardian from the Ukrainian steppes — a large, shaggy, fierce guardian dog developed to protect Merino sheep flocks on the vast open grasslands of southern Ukraine and Russia. The breed bears a resemblance to the Komondor and Old English Sheepdog but is genetically distinct — it descends from ancient Tatar livestock guardians crossed with local shepherd dogs and Spanish Merino guardian dogs brought by Spanish colonists. It is not recommended as a pet for most owners — the breed requires exceptional experience and confident leadership.

A large, powerful dog completely covered in a long, shaggy, harsh double coat that falls over the face and eyes — similar in appearance to the Komondor but without the cord formation. Always white or light-coloured. The overall impression is of a large, shaggy, polar bear-like dog of considerable power.

The South Russian Ovcharka was reportedly used by Czar Alexander II of Russia as a guard dog for the royal estates on the Black Sea coast — the breed's fierce guardian nature made it ideal for protecting large properties.
The breed's coat grows over the eyes completely — this is not accidental. The thick hair provides protection from the sun's glare on the open steppes and also from bites from prey being guarded against.
