The Story
The Rampur Greyhound is a large, powerful sighthound bred by the Nawabs of Rampur in Uttar Pradesh — developed by crossing the Afghan Hound with native Indian sighthound breeds including the Tazi. Created to hunt large game including wild boar, jackals, and nilgai on the North Indian plains and forests, the Rampur Greyhound is larger and more powerful than the Mudhol Hound — it has the power to take down large prey that smaller sighthounds cannot. The breed is now rare even in India, with numbers declining due to changes in traditional hunting practices.

A large, powerfully built sighthound — broader-headed than the Mudhol Hound or Saluki, with a more muscular neck and body. The coat is smooth and short. The classic colour is mouse-grey but various colours occur. The Rampur Greyhound is less refined in appearance than some sighthounds — it was bred for power and endurance as well as speed.
