The Story

The Pastore Abruzzese is a high-Apennine livestock guardian breed from the Abruzzo region of central Italy — closely related to the Maremma Sheepdog but adapted to the higher-altitude, more extreme conditions of the central Apennines. The two breeds are so similar that Italian cynologists have long debated whether they are one breed or two. The FCI formally combined them as the "Cane da Pastore Maremmano-Abruzzese" but the ENCI and local breeders maintain that mountain (Abruzzese) and coastal plains (Maremmano) types have distinct characteristics. The Pastore Abruzzese is typically slightly larger and heavier-coated than the Maremmano type.
