The Story
The Manchester Terrier is the oldest of all identifiable terrier breeds, its origins traceable to the Old Black and Tan Terrier of northern England. Developed in the 19th century in Manchester by crossing the Old Black and Tan with Whippets — producing a faster, sleeker dog that could kill rats in pits (rat-baiting) and course rabbits — the Manchester Terrier is effectively a miniature racing dog crossed with a terrier. The precise tan markings on the jet black coat are unique and breed-defining. The Manchester Terrier comes in two varieties: Standard (up to 10 kg) and Toy (under 5.4 kg).

The Manchester Terrier is a sleek, elegant terrier with a well-arched neck, long head, and a short, close, glossy coat. The precise black and tan markings are a defining feature: tan on the muzzle, above each eye, below the ears, on the chest (two tan spots forming a "thumbprint"), on the legs, and under the tail — all set against a jet black body. The Whippet influence is visible in the racy, athletic build.

Fun Facts
The Manchester Terrier is considered the oldest identifiable breed of terrier — the "Old Black and Tan Terrier" that is its ancestor appears in historical records from the 16th century.
Manchester Terriers were used extensively in rat-baiting contests in 19th-century England — the record for rats killed in a timed pit competition was held by a Manchester Terrier named Billy, who killed 100 rats in 6 minutes 13 seconds in 1825.
The Manchester Terrier's Whippet heritage gives it a sprinting ability unusual among terrier breeds — they can reach speeds approaching 45 km/h over short distances, making them natural coursing dogs.
