The Story
The Kombai is a powerful, courageous hunting dog from the Theni-Rajapalayam area of Tamil Nadu — bred to hunt dangerous game including bear, wild boar, and bison in the forests of the Western Ghats. The breed has a distinctive "saddle" marking — a darker colouration across the back — and a muscular, compact body built for power and endurance rather than speed. The Kombai played a significant role in Tamil history — the Maruthu Brothers, who led resistance against British colonialism in the 18th century, reportedly used Kombai dogs in guerrilla warfare. The breed is now critically rare.

Fun Facts
The Maruthu Brothers — Periya Maruthu and Chinna Maruthu, who led the Vellore Mutiny and resistance against British colonial rule in the late 18th century — reportedly used Kombai dogs in guerrilla operations against British troops in the forests of the Western Ghats.
The Kombai's hunting ability against dangerous game including bear is the source of its alternative name "Indian Bear Hound" — the breed was trained to hold large, dangerous animals at bay until the hunters arrived.
