The Story
The Finnish Hound is Finland's most popular breed — a tricolour scent hound developed in the 18th and 19th centuries from crosses of various European hound breeds. Bred for hunting hare and fox in Finland's forests, lakes, and snow, the Finnish Hound is cold-tolerant and adapted to difficult Nordic terrain. It hunts alone, baying to indicate its trail position to the hunter. Despite being primarily a working hunting dog, it is widely kept as a family pet in Finland.

Fun Facts
The Finnish Hound is consistently the most registered dog breed in Finland — its dual role as hunting companion and family dog has made it the quintessential Finnish dog for generations.
The Finnish Hound was developed to work in the specific conditions of Finnish forests — where deep snow, thick undergrowth, and very cold temperatures (-20°C or below) are normal hunting conditions. Its cold tolerance and dense coat reflect this demanding environment.
