The Story
The Cairn Terrier is the oldest of the Scottish terrier breeds, developed on the Isle of Skye and Scottish Highlands to hunt vermin among the cairns (rock piles) that dot the Highland landscape. One of the most famous dogs in cinema history is a Cairn Terrier — Toto, Dorothy's companion in The Wizard of Oz (1939). The Cairn is a small, shaggy, hardy working terrier with a cheerful, affectionate disposition that makes it an excellent family companion while retaining all the courage and tenacity of its working heritage.

Fun Facts
Toto in The Wizard of Oz was played by a female Cairn Terrier named Terry who earned $125 per week during filming — more than many of the human actors.
The Cairn Terrier's name comes from the cairns (stone piles used as landmarks) throughout the Scottish Highlands where the dogs hunted vermin.
Cairn Terriers can change colour dramatically as they age — a puppy born dark may become almost completely cream or silver over several years.
