The Story
The Black and Tan Coonhound is the first coonhound breed to receive AKC recognition (1945) — one of the quintessential American hunting hound breeds, developed in the Appalachian Mountains and used for night hunting of raccoon, bear, and mountain lion. Descended from Bloodhound and Foxhound crosses, the Black and Tan has exceptional scenting ability and tracks by night by scenting ground trails. The baying voice is legendary — long, deep, musical baying that can be heard for miles, designed to let the hunter locate the dog in darkness. The same mellow, gentle temperament that makes it a beloved family dog makes it frustratingly difficult to recall on a scent trail.

Fun Facts
The Black and Tan Coonhound hunts exclusively at night — raccoon hunting in the American tradition is a night sport. The hunters follow the distant baying of their dogs through the darkness, guided by the changing note of the bay that signals "I've treed the quarry."
