The Story

The Belgian Tervuren is one of four Belgian Shepherd varieties distinguished primarily by coat type and colour. The Tervuren has the longest, richest coat of the four — a magnificent long double coat in fawn to russet with black tipping and a dramatic black mask. Considered by many to be the most beautiful of the Belgian Shepherds, the Tervuren combines the high drive and intelligence of its working heritage with an elegant appearance. They are versatile competitors in herding, obedience, agility, tracking, and protection sports, and serve in police and military roles worldwide.

Physical Profile

Belgian Tervuren

Source: wikimedia

The Tervuren is elegant and athletic — similar in build to the Malinois but with a long, abundant double coat. The characteristic rich fawn to russet colour with black overlay creates a depth of colouring that is unique in the herding group. The black mask and ears contrast with the warm body colour. The mane and frill around the neck and chest are particularly full and dramatic. The tail is well-feathered.

Temperament & Personality

Tervurens are highly driven, sensitive, and intensely bonded to their handler. They are not dogs for casual or inexperienced owners — their intelligence and energy require an owner who can provide structured training, consistent work, and adequate exercise daily. They are protective of their family and watchful without being reactive. Their sensitivity means they need positive training methods; harsh approaches damage the relationship and produce anxiety.

Fun Facts

01

The four Belgian Shepherd varieties — Malinois, Tervuren, Groenendael (Belgian Sheepdog), and Laekenois — were once considered the same breed and are still treated as varieties of one breed by the FCI, while the AKC registers them as separate breeds.

02

Belgian Tervurens have won the AKC's national herding championship multiple times, demonstrating that their working ability matches their dramatic appearance.

03

The Tervuren's distinctive black-tipped coat colouring is called "sable" — each individual hair is banded with multiple colours, creating the characteristic shimmering depth effect.
