The Story
The Azawakh is a sighthound from West Africa, developed over thousands of years by the Tuareg nomads of the Sahel region as a hunting and guarding dog. Unlike most sighthounds which hunt alone, the Azawakh was bred to hunt in packs, coursing gazelle and hare across the African savannah. The breed is genetically distinct from European and Middle Eastern sighthounds and has been largely isolated from outside breeding for centuries. They are deeply bonded to their human family but almost entirely closed to all others — one of the most dramatically different dog temperaments found in any recognised breed.

Physical Profile

Source: wikimedia
The Azawakh is one of the most extreme in conformation of all sighthounds — extraordinarily long-legged, deep-chested, and narrow, with visible muscle definition and bones under very tight, thin skin. The profile shows a rising topline, extremely long legs, and minimal body mass. The coat is very short and fine — providing minimal insulation. White markings on the feet, tail tip, and often chest are characteristic. The expression is proud and distant.

Temperament & Personality
The Azawakh's relationship with people is profoundly selective — they bond deeply and permanently with their specific family and are indifferent to hostile toward all others. They do not warm up to strangers over time in the way many breeds do. Within their family they can be affectionate and demonstrative. Their independence and aloof nature requires very patient, experienced owners with realistic expectations.

Care & Wellness
Professional Care Protocol
- •Daily vigorous exercise in securely fenced areas. Their thin coat provides no protection against cold — a coat is essential outdoors in cold weather. Like all sighthounds, anaesthetic sensitivity is critical. They are extremely sensitive to rough handling.
Nutrition Notes
Extremely lean build is NORMAL — hip bones and ribs clearly visible. Do NOT overfeed. Sighthound anaesthesia sensitivity. One of the healthiest breeds — Saharan desert origin means extreme natural selection. Few dietary restrictions.

Senior Care
Remarkably few genetic health issues — natural selection in Sahara desert for millennia. Seizures in some lines (idiopathic epilepsy). Autoimmune thyroiditis. Sighthound drug sensitivity. idealWeatherMaxC = 42 — THE most heat-tolerant dog breed. Tuareg guardian sighthound. 12-15 years.

Health Overview
Generally very healthy due to centuries of natural selection. Autoimmune conditions (hypothyroidism, anaemia) occur at elevated rates. Bloat/GDV is a risk. Anaesthetic sensitivity as for all sighthounds.

Fun Facts
The Azawakh is one of the few sighthound breeds that is also a guard dog — it is used by Tuareg nomads both to course game during the day and to guard the camp at night, an unusual combination of roles for a sighthound.
Azawakhs are named after the Azawagh Valley in Mali where the Tuareg historically lived and bred them.
DNA studies show the Azawakh is genetically distinct from all other sighthound breeds — the West African isolation produced a breed that shares sighthound morphology but with a different genetic lineage from the Greyhound, Saluki, or Whippet.
