American Bulldog
The American Bulldog is not the same breed as the English Bulldog — it is the working descendant of the historical English working Bulldog brought to America by Southern settlers in the 17th–18th centuries, preserved in rural Southern states for farm work (catching feral hogs, guarding property) while the English Bulldog diverged into its extreme show conformation.

The Story
The American Bulldog is not the same breed as the English Bulldog — it is the working descendant of the historical English working Bulldog brought to America by Southern settlers in the 17th–18th centuries, preserved in rural Southern states for farm work (catching feral hogs, guarding property) while the English Bulldog diverged into its extreme show conformation. The American Bulldog can breathe, run, jump, and reproduce naturally — it is significantly more athletic and healthy than the English Bulldog. Two primary types exist: the Scott (more athletic, lighter) and the Johnson (heavier, more Mastiff-like).

Fun Facts
The American Bulldog was nearly extinct after WWII — the breed survived primarily because of John D. Johnson and Alan Scott in Alabama, who found the remaining working bulldogs in rural Southern communities and began preservation breeding programmes.
Chance, the dog character in the film "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey" (1993), was played by an American Bulldog — one of the most famous American Bulldogs in popular culture.
