The Story
The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog is a rare American working bulldog from the Alapaha River region of Georgia — a breed maintained by the Lane family of Rebecca, Georgia for over 200 years as a plantation catch and guard dog. Papa Buck Lane developed the breed in the 1800s, and it was nearly lost when his great-granddaughter Lana Lou Lane's sole male breeding dog was killed by a train in 1943. She rebuilt the breed from just four dogs. The distinctive name comes from the unusual blue or glass-like eyes common in the breed from merle genetics, and "Blue Blood" refers to its status as an aristocratic Southern family's prized dog. It is one of America's rarest breeds.

Fun Facts
The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog was nearly wiped out in 1943 when the sole breeding male was killed by a train near Rebecca, Georgia. Lana Lou Lane rebuilt the breed from only four remaining dogs.
The breed has been maintained by a single family — the Lane family — for over 200 years, making it one of the longest single-family breed stewardships in American dog history.
