The Story

The Appenzeller Sennenhund is the second-smallest and arguably the most energetic of the four Swiss mountain dog breeds. A traditional Swiss herding and droving dog from the Appenzell region, the Appenzeller is known for its extreme energy, vocal nature, and versatile working ability — it has been used for herding, guarding, cart pulling, and search and rescue. Unlike the calm, gentle Bernese, the Appenzeller is an intense, active working breed that needs a purpose. It is rare outside Switzerland and neighbouring countries.

Temperament & Personality

Lively, self-assured, and vocal — the Appenzeller is described as "loud" and "boisterous" compared to its Swiss cousins. It is devoted to its family. It requires an active, experienced owner who can channel its high energy constructively. It is best suited to rural or active suburban environments.

Fun Facts

01

The Appenzeller is the only one of the four Swiss Sennenhund breeds with a curled tail — the others carry the tail in various positions but not the tight curl over the back characteristic of the Appenzeller.

02

In Switzerland the Appenzeller is used in mountain rescue operations — its hardiness, intelligence, and athleticism make it well-suited to alpine search and rescue work.
